Urša Šivic is an ethnomusicologist at the Institute of Musicology at ZRC SAZU, with a primary focus on Slovenian vocal folk music. In 2006, she defended her doctoral thesis titled “Transformations of Slovenian Folk Songs in Popular Music in the 1990s” at the Department of Musicology of the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana.
Šivic’s research focuses on various critical perspectives on Slovenian folk singing, such as the theoretical structures of folk singing styles (petje na tretko/singing on the third, two-part singing in Prekmurje and Porabje, the baritone voice in folk singing, the singing of funeral songs in Prekmurje and Porabje etc.). She has also dedicated her work to observing the influence of institutional criteria on the transformation of folk singing, processes of folklorization, and the phenomenon of Dalmatian klapa groups and Serbian brass bands in Slovenia. Her work is significantly marked by field research, particularly the observation of music-related caroling traditions, such as New Year’s, Epiphany, St. George’s Day, St. Florian’s Day, and Midsummer caroling, as well as carnival processions. Since 2022, she has led the applied research project, “Digitization of France Marolt’s Legacy and Understanding of His Scientific and Artistic Work,” and coordinates the process of digitizing and documenting the legacy as well as the applied and research project outcomes. One of the most notable project outcomes was the exhibition “The Legacy of France Marolt.”
Urša Šivic has edited numerous monographs and served on editorial boards; for several years, she collaborated with the Public Fund of the Republic of Slovenia for Cultural Activities as an evaluator of folk singers’ and musicians’ gatherings and as a lecturer at seminars and workshops; she also worked as a critic in various media, such as Delo, Naši zbori, Muska, Odzven, Radio Slovenia – Program Ars, and Folklornik; between 2010 and 2020, she hosted the Folk Union event, where she welcomed groups of folk singers and musicians and presented musical and other folklore material with expert commentary.
