Eva Fekonja is a junior researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU) and a doctoral student in Humanities and Social Sciences (Ethnology, Social and Cultural Anthropology) at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. She also holds a degree in psychology and has several years of professional experience in education, social welfare, and the non-governmental sector. In her doctoral dissertation, she explores the diverse meanings and contexts of Balkan traditional music through participant observation and interviews with singers in ethno choirs.
In her doctoral research, Eva Fekonja focuses on traditional music from the Balkan region and the various contemporary cultural, social, and ideological contexts and discourses that accompany its manifestations and transformations in present-day Slovenia. Her work is primarily based on ethnographic methodology, connecting the experiences and narratives of research participants with broader concepts such as Orientalism and Balkanism, past cingpresen, neoliberal constructions of “self-word,” ideologies of voice and vocal production, and spiritual (or post-secular) feminism.
Previously, her research addressed the concept of hospitality and the processes of homemaking among Afghan refugees in Albania (master’s thesis in ethnology and cultural anthropology), as well as critical-psychological understandings of the relationship between the individual and society (undergraduate thesis in psychology). She is a member of the research programme Heritage on the Margins: New Perspectives on Heritage and Identity Within and Beyond the National, to which she contributes insights into the multilayered relationships to the past as reflected in contemporary music production inspired by folk music traditions.
