The monograph ('Echo of Home – Music in the Slovenian Community in Switzerland') examines the Slovenian community through selected aspects of its musical life. It outlines the development of research on music in migration contexts, the role of music in shaping identities in a new environment, and the significance of community practices that emerge around musical activities after resettlement.
Music as part of migration processes is presented through case studies dating from the late 1960s onwards: from the formation of folk-dance groups and the use of music and dance as tools of communication in a new setting, to the role of Oberkrainer music as a symbolic means of articulating identity and its transmission into a new environment. The discussion also includes the importance of traditional singing of church songs during liturgy and pilgrimages within the Slovenian Catholic community. In addition, it presents the experiences of selected musicians and their migration trajectories. The final case study focuses on the interethnic dynamics of the multicultural musical space of the Slovenian community in Switzerland, particularly among descendants of those who had migrated to Slovenia. These examples reveal diverse integration processes that influence transformations of the musical landscape both in Slovenia and among Slovenian minority communities around the world.
