JVLMA mixed choir was founded in 1945, only a couple of years after the State Academic choir Latvija. The choir often performed in Latvia and abroad performing works of different epochs, styles and genres. Between 1992 and 2005 the choir participated in 27 projects of the European Choral Academy performing in Germany, Poland, Greece, Sweden and the USA under the leadership of Sylvain Cambreling and Michael Gielen. Together with the State Academic choir Latvija, Ave Sol and Riga Radio Choir JVLMA mixed choir participates in the International Jāzeps Vītols Choir Conducting competitions.

In the last years JVLMA mixed choir has collaborated with outstanding international visiting condutors Eric Van Nevel, Per Burin, Stojan Kuret, Jos Van Veldhoven, Jörg-Peter Weigle and Stephen Layton.

In 2006 the choir was awarded Grand Prix on the International Choral Competition in Maribor (Slovenia), in 2007 – Grand Prix in all 4 categories on the 39th International Choral Competition in Tolos (Spain), in 2009 – 2nd prize on the European Choral Music Competition.

The artistic leadership of the choir in the last decades was realized by Juris Kļaviņš, Romans Vanags, Ints Teterovskis, Mārtiņš Klišāns, Māris Sirmais. Since September 2017 the chief conductor is the talented and dynamic Janis Ozols who represents younger generation of the Latvian choir conductors.

In February 2013 mixed choir mastered the renaissance music programme with the outstanding Slovenian conductor Stojan Kuret, but in October 2013 performed the programme of the Latvian vocal symphonic music. At the beginning of 2014 the choir prepared the programme of premieres of the Latvian composers Spodrē manu dvēselīt` which was performed in Riga and in the new acoustic concert hall Gors in Rezekne. In 2015 JVLMA mixed choir with great success performed two concerts in frames of the International Week of Conservatoires in St.Petersburg and collaborated with the student choir of St.Petersburg Conservatory.

In January 2017 the world famous Stephen Layton during the intensive workshop with the JVLMA mixed choir prepared the programme of the English renaissance which was performed in the Anglican church. In March 2018 in collaboration with the American conductor Derrick Fox the choir worked on the magnificent programme of the traditional African American choir music.

In spring 2017 in frames of the exchange with the chamber choir of the University of Arts Bremen the choir performed three concerts in Bremen, but in spring of 2018 was invited for the concerts in Rostock and Schwerin with the best selection of the Baltic composers` music for choir.
